Change The RO Membrane In A Water Purifier To Reduce It's Water Usage

This is just something that I learned from experience and observation of having used a reverse osmosis water purifier for several years. In one of the previous posts I had spoken about the amount of water that reverse osmosis water purifier tends to discard for every litre of purified water that it dispels.

If you have read that post and you remember what I had written in it I had remarked on the considerable amount of water that is discarded during the purification process. I had also remarked that the temperature of the water has a dramatic difference on the amount of water that reverse osmosis water purifier discard. The colder the water, such as in the winter months, the more water tends to get discarded.

However, there is another important reason and control factor that determines how much water is discarded by the reverse osmosis water purifier and that is the condition of the reverse osmosis membrane as well as other filters inside the water purifier. The older that the reverse osmosis membrane candle gets, the more, water it tends to discard.

This means that you need to follow a certain maintenance schedule when it comes to replacing the reverse osmosis membrane in the water purifier. But what exactly is this maintenance schedule and when do you need to replace this candle?

The companies that make reverse osmosis what a purifies will often try to sell you an annual maintenance plan in which day service, the water purifier a couple of times in a year and also change all the candles inside, including the reverse osmosis candle and the sediment candles once a year. However, this is excessive.

If you pay attention to the filters being installed in your water purifier, they have a label on it that clearly marks as to when they are required to be replaced. You will be able to read this information when your water purifier first gets installed. If you are curious, you can always open them back cover if it is accessible and check this information out for yourself. You can always ask the service technician for this information as well since this is something most of them never apprise you off and sometimes I doubt if they are completely aware of it themselves. They are not completely wrong in this matter as it really depends on your usage and the amount of water that gets filtered every day which consecutively depends on the size of your household and the amount of water being consumed.

For example, reverse osmosis scandal typically mentions that it needs to be replaced for every 25,000 L. I assume this means every 25,000 L of purified and filtered water. Now you calculate as to how much water is consumed in your household every day and therefore when does the Ro membrane actually need to be replaced since it is one of the more expensive components of service maintenance.

The candles such as the sediment candle will have a shorter lifespan and they will often mention timeframe instant of instead of actual cubic capacity of filtered water. For example the sediment candle in my reverse osmosis water purifier says that it is advisable to change this scandal every six months. However, I have found our work around to this as well by installing an external sediment filter which is easier to clean and replace and goes a long way in extending the life of the internal candle which needs dismantling of the water purifying unit to be replaced.

There is a trade off between the life of the RO membrane and the amount of water that the water purifier discards during the water purification process. If you find that your reverse osmosis water purifier is beginning to discard more water than it usually does, it is usually a good idea to change the filtration membranes to save on water. A new membrane reduces water usage to a great extent and also given the fact that with time better reverse osmosis membranes might be getting developed which use less water for the filtration process.

Therefore, in order to keep the water usage to a minimal for your reverse osmosis water purifier, change the filter candles, especially the reverse osmosis filter candle when you can, as per schedule and maybe even slightly before to reduce the amount of water it discards during filtration.

And of course, it goes without saying try to collect this water for other uses or direct the outflow responsibly such as into your garden for the purpose of water conservation.

How Much Water Does RO Water Purifeir Discard As Waste Water

Most people are not aware of how much water gets wasted in their reverse osmosis water purifier. A company will claim 1:2 ratio but that is mostly not the case. Most ro water purifiers will discard 80% of the water. I have measured the amount of water that gets wasted as I collect all the extra water to be used for other household purposes. My reverse osmosis water purifier discards at least 4 to 5 L of water and that's in summers and when the membrane is new and unclogged.  Most people do not know that a reverse osmosis water purifying system discards a lot more water the colder the water gets. So it's not surprising for the amount of discarded water to double in winters. Another important observation that I have made is that even though the membrane life is 6000 L , there is degradation in its performance after the first 1500 L or so. It starts to discard a lot more water to filter each litre of clean water. This happens because all the filtered out TDS starts to clog the me...

How To Chose An RO Water Purifer For Your Home

An RO water purifier is considered to be the safest option for clean and healthy drinking water in our homes today. In many instances it's an overkill and not really required but that is another discussion. In this post we will talk about how to choose the best RO water purifier system for your home. We will talk about the important features and functionality that a good RO water purifier should have. FILTRATION PROCESS Let's start with the filtration technology that it uses. And RO water purifier uses reverse osmosis to remove the contaminants from the water. This includes bacteria and parasites, as well as dissolved salts and minerals. Reverse Osmosis Reverse osmosis is a process by which the water is forcefully pushed across a membrane which has very tiny pores in it. These pores are so small that mostly only the water molecules can pass through it and everything else that is dissolved in it gets caught and filtered out.
